Risk Professional: new wave of internet frauds

The pump and dump is alive and well and no doubt those with poor systems to intercept spam are deluged with them. But a new technique has succeeded in passing some via our own very effective multi-level screening so that they not only make it to the desktop, but are not even marked as possible spam.

One that was marked as spam by one of our filters but not others, is for a pump and dump relating to a US company called Victory Energy Corp. quoting a press release from only two days earlier and surrounding it with apparent editorial.

But one that made it to the desktop entirely unmolested was a pump and dump for Capital City Energy Group, Inc. - which simply replicated a press release by a company that ticks all the boxes for those who want to play markets with a little knowledge. It's a fund management and venture capital company specialising in the energy sector, according to the press release - and it's just reversed itself into a listed company. The listing is, one might almost say inevitably, on the Pink Sheets - this is where most pump and dump activity takes place. The trick that made this reach the desktop is that it is, except for the fact that the sender is a sham and the purpose of the mailing is criminal, the content is entirely legitimate. Please note, we do not comment on the company or its statements, merely that the email itself does not contain anything other than the media release apparently distributed by the company.

But, for the sake of completeness, we went to look at the company's SEC filings in January of this year and this is what we found:

"We were formed on June 27, 2006 to engage in the business of designing, marketing and distributing handcrafted baby blankets and other accessories made from quality fabrics. Our business operations have been conducted through our wholly owned subsidiary, Baby Dot LLC, a limited liability company incorporated under the laws of the State of Nevada. On August 15, 2006, we acquired Baby Dot, LLC from Ms. Jennie Slade, our officer and director, in exchange for 2,000,000 shares of our common stock. In that acquisition, we acquired all assets of the limited liability company, including our website, an existing but limited inventory of products, and all rights to the BabyDot designs.

"Because demand for our products has been very limited, we have put a hold on our search to develop large-scale manufacturing from third party sources. In order to reserve needed capital to survive, we have also halted specific plans to implement our business plan, including expanding the creativity and functionality of our website, attending the ABC Kids Expo, and other plans. "As of the date of this annual, we are unsure whether our business will continue as a going concern. We have very limited revenues, and the bulk of our cash is from investor funds, which is slowly being depleting with operating expenses associated with running our business and fulfilling our reporting obligations as a public company. "

What has happened is that the energy company has reversed itself into the failed baby clothing company called "Baby Dot Company" and changed the name of the public company, a common practice in Pink Sheets companies.

Away from pump and dump, the email reproduced below had, at least, the merit of amusing us. It's a simple, out and out fraud. We receive many reports from people all over the world who have made applications for jobs on what they think are proper "jobs boards" and then receive correspondence of this sort.

Still, sending this to our parent company at antimoneylaundering.net shows that the fraudsters are not always adopting such sophisticated techniques and are quite willing to use old fashioned spam blasting to put their nonsense in front of as many people as possible.

Don't reply to it: just read and enjoy the humour and, perhaps, even play "spot the trigger" to see what sort of person you think might reply.
