Active Planet: McCain wants "a bunch" of nuke plants

US Presidential hopeful John McCain set out his environmental stall in the second of two live debates, this one held on 7th September. He thinks that building nuclear power plants - "a whole bunch of them" - will solve several problems at once.

Active Planet: Water powered cars?

Run your car on water ads – true or false?

Active Planet: London to ban SUV's?

London's Mayor, Ken Livingston, has already made a huge difference to London's traffic problems with the "congestion charge" - which deters motorists from using a car in Central London as much by inconvenience as by the amount of the charge. Now he plans to follow the example of Venice.

Swiss Re moves carbon desk to London

"London has become the epicentre for carbon markets due to the presence of key players and proximity to many of the affected installations," says the company, announcing that it is moving operations from New York to London.

AUS: PM elect Rudd brings radical environmentalist in from the cold

It's probably impossible for a non-Australian to understand the reverence that most Aussies feel for the band Midnight Oil. They were not the world's best musicians, and their singer didn't have the greatest voice - but they produced some stonking music and produced protest songs when the rest of the world was busy singing "oh, baybeh." Their lead singer left and went into politics proper. Now he's getting his reward.

Live Earth: a curate's egg

Today's big event is the Live Earth concert in association with Al Gore, as rock stars strutted their stuff on six continents to draw attention to climate change. Amazing facts abounded at the Sydney event - like Australia is the world's biggest carbon footprint producer. Really? But hell, we can forgive them anything: for they had CROWDED HOUSE. I mean, C R O W D E D H O U S E ! ! ! None of the other concerts are billing anything even close.

Environment: Alaska, Bush, local politicians and oil companies.

Alaskan oil politics is not just about Bush's designs on sub-tundra exploitation. It's also about surprisingly small amounts of corruption money for performing surprisingly large favours.

Environment: Wind farms not all they are cracked up to be

Wind farms are touted as a significant part of the solution for clean, renewable energy. But a new study says it's not all good news.

Homespun wisdom

Wasted energy is a worrying thing. So are there ideas for using fuel more efficiently? We ask around and trawl the web.
