Landing in bad weather, the present suggestion is that the aircraft touched down too late, too steeply and too fast in the rain-sodden conditions. It bounced then slid onto the beach. At some point, the left undercarriage collapsed and the nose was bashed.
Other aircraft had landed in similar conditions earlier, said the airport.
All 154 passengers and crew were evacuated safely, carried to the terminal by airport bus. A number of passengers said that they were left to deal with cuts and bruises themselves. But more than 90 were taken to hospital and 13 admitted.
The plane, a Boeing 737-800 is dead, it's back broken and the cabin separating into two during the crash.
